kids brazilian jiu jitsu
What kind of gear does my child need?
Most children train jiu jitsu in what is called a "gi" or kimono. It is the traditional uniform for practicing brazilian jiu jitsu. However, a child is not required to wear one to train with us. If you would like to purchase a gi and belt for your child, speak with us and we can order them for you at a discounted price.
Flow Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches kids ages 5-14 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in a fun, welcoming environment. Our approach is centered around building confidence and self esteem, while learning basic awareness and self defense concepts in a fun environment. Classes are split into two different age groups: The Piranhas (ages 5-9) and the Sharks (ages 10-14). The Piranhas are instructed by BJJ Purple Belt Angela Crawford, and the Sharks are instructed by BJJ Brown Belt Hayden Martz.
PIRANHAS - class is for students ages 5-9. The class is centered around confidence building, and getting used to the movements of Jiu Jitsu and self defense. This is done through numerous mat drills and jiu jitsu "games." Kids of all ages love the games, and before you know it, you will be practicing them at home with them! Sign up for Piranhas HERE
SHARKS - class is for students ages 10-14. The class also centers around confidence building, and the fundamental movements of Jiu Jitsu and self defense, but goes further. Kids will do mat drills, and some jiu jitsu games, but will also learn techniques essential to jiu jitsu and self defense. Once kids reach a high enough proficiency they will work in pairs with controlled drilling of the movements they have learned. Sharks will become proficient at everything from escapes and top control, to basic chokes and armlocks. Sign up for Sharks HERE
Rules of Engagement
At Flow BJJ we have strict rules of engagement that the kids must memorize. Ideally, in any bully confrontation, avoiding the fight is job #1. Here are our rules:
AVOID the fight
DEFEND yourself when necessary
CONTROL the bully/attacker
SUBMIT only when afraid for your life
Flow Brazilian Jiu Jitsu utilizes the IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation) belt system for promotions. After each month of attendance kids will earn a "stripe" on their current belt. After 4 stripes, they will be eligible to move up to the next belt rank. The chart to the left illustrates the BJJ belt system:
