What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a sport, a martial art, and a self-defense fighting system with a strong focus on ground fighting techniques. When studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (also called BJJ) you will learn how to control and submit an opponent with various holds, joint locks, and chokes.
BJJ is sometimes called Arte Suave, or the ‘Gentle Art’. This is because Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu allows you can control a fight without hurting your opponent and promotes the intelligent use of leverage and position to allow a smaller, more technical fighter overcome a bigger, stronger adversary.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is also a key component of Mixed Martial Arts, and a close cousin of Judo.
